There are no particular thoughts in this kind of meditation; it is just a general awareness of what is going on inside and around you. Non-guided meditation requires no special equipment or training.
What Is Unguided Meditation?
Unguided meditation is the same as Non-Guided Meditation
Unguided meditation does not involve a teacher, a spiritual guide, or even a written script.
In fact, it is perhaps the easiest type of meditation because it only involves your breathing and thoughts. You don’t need to worry about reciting any words or mantras while you meditate.
If you happen to fall asleep during an unguided meditation session, don’t worry. The point of meditation is to relax and calm the mind, so if that happens to involve closing your eyes and taking a nap, then do so.
Just remember that some forms of relaxation, such as napping, have their own set of rules and can have side effects if overused.

We’re often asked, “is it better to do guided or unguided meditation?”
The answer is: there’s no right choice. Guided meditation is a great way to learn how to meditate if you’re just starting out. A soothing voice can help you relax and keep your attention on the breath or an image or mantra.
For the beginner, guided meditation has a lot of benefits. It helps you learn the ropes and keep your practice on track.
It can also help you develop new skills, such as cultivating gratitude or loving-kindness.
If you’re more advanced in your meditation practice, unguided meditation can be more beneficial in helping you expand your potential to concentrate and focus on deeper levels.
In other words, I would recommend guided for beginners and unguided for those who have been meditating for some time.

How to Focus during Non-Guided Meditation
The purpose of non-guided meditation is to practice focus and awareness on your own.
It can be difficult to learn how to meditate without guidance, but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy to do on your own.
- Find a quiet place with no distractions
- Close your eyes and start taking deep breaths.
- Start with counting each breath backward from 100 to 0.
- As you breathe, release any thoughts that come into your mind. Don’t judge them or let them become anything more than thoughts — just let them pass through your mind and disappear as you exhale your next breath.
- Once you get to zero, stop counting, but continue breathing deeply and releasing all thoughts until you feel ready to open your eyes once again.
Techniques for Non-Guided Mediation
Non-guided meditation is a meditation technique that does not require you to listen to someone talking.
Meditation is a very personal experience and there are many ways to go about it. Some people like to be told what to do, while others prefer to find their own way.
Non guided meditation techniques include:
- Counting breaths
- Lotus flower breathing

- Mindfulness of the body.
We are all unique, and therefore the benefits of guided and non-guided meditations will vary from person to person. Short-term results will vary, too.
I would guess that, with time and experience, the range of benefits that can be gained from a meditative practice would become apparent.
We all have mental clutter to deal with and learning some way to calm ourselves, no matter how temporary, seems like a worthwhile endeavor.

How Can I Meditate Without Guidance?
Tilt your head forward (tuck your chin in) and soften your look so that the back of your neck seems broad and open. Allow your tongue to rest lightly at the bottom of your mouth for a few seconds, and notice how stable and comfortable this position is. Take note of how long-lasting it is.
